Personal Reminder

since zhenyi has a reminder i’ll remind myself of this too.

i really enjoy the things i’m doing now. i enjoy serving God this way, i enjoy the market movements everyday. if one day i stop doing things i enjoy, i’ll remind myself of this day, and enjoy whatever i’m doing then (:

Opportunities

Pastor Kong’s message blew my mind. indeed, there is unlimited potential we can tap on if we would just allow our mind to expand. and I love what pastor Derek said in the prayer meeting. as Christians, we are not limited by what the world is saying. but instead of being simpletons, we KNOW what’s going on, and are able to capture opportunities in the midst of all these.

in this kind of market, only the best survives. and i’m able to say, i’m surviving.

“Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful”
- Warren Buffet

“[Bad news] allows you to buy a slice of the future for a marked down price”
- Warren Buffet

so instead of panicking, it’s time to keep our eyes open for opportunities. which means we don’t pump our life savings into stocks now. be disciplined. remember, we’re looking at at least 6mth-2 years recovery window.

some analysts i’ve been speaking to think we’re near bottom. it would be impossible to time the bottom, and those who are trying to time the bottom are either wasting their time or using ‘timing the bottom’ as an excuse for their inability to analyze and spot opportunities.

i’m not a rocket scientist, neither do i know what’s going to happen. but there are opportunities that takes on fixed upside and very little downsides, if u know what i’m talking about.

company bonds, for example, are so cheap because of the little exercising chance in 3 years, because of ridiculously cheap stock prices. however, they are giving you amazing discounts and therefore amazing fixed returns in the near future.

this is a good time to buy things, for both value investors and technical traders. especially when we are equipped with the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

Again, i don’t know for sure. in the short term, probably things are still going to look gloomy. unemployment will rise, business activity will falter and headlines will continue to be scary. but don’t forget that equities is a leading indicator while the economy always lacks behind. so don’t let bad news in the press affect us too much. most of those reported are already factored in the current price.

I don’t like to opine on the stock market, and again I emphasize that I have no idea what the market will do in the short term. Nevertheless, I’ll follow the lead of a restaurant that opened in an empty bank building and then advertised: “Put your mouth where your money was.” Today my money and my mouth both say equities”" — Warren Buffet

on another note, please continue to pray for me!! my voice is still not so good and i wish to sing soon (:

Words and music by KC Gan, 2008

When the stage is bare tonight
There’s no one else
Just You and me
When the curtains close behind
There’s no pretense
I’m on my knees

I will lay down my life
For the love sacrifice
You gave to me
It’s all because of You
All because of You

The God I know
Righteous and Holy
The God I know
Faithful and true
The God I know
My tower of refuge
Hearts are healed
Christ revealed

The God I know
Light of the City
The God I know
Strengthens the weak
The God I know
Your heart beats within me
As You are, so are we

This is my cry
My one desire
More of You
More of You

The church He knows
Righteous and Holy
The church He knows
Is faithful and true
The church He knows
A tower of refuge
Hearts are healed
Christ revealed

The church He knows
Light of this city
The church He knows
Strengthens the weak
The church He knows
Is strong and mighty
As He is, so are we

i’m..

hungry

tired

and sick.

my head is killing me and i’m dreading my way home by bus.

coz cab is too expensive.

and coz my groupmates conveniently cancelled meeting without telling me.

meeting that i came to school especially for.

i’m not angry coz not really their fault they just assumed i’m not coming coz i’m sick.

but i came and i went around the school like mad thinking i’m late and i can’t rmb the room they booked.

sigh.

and i can’t even sing coz i lost my voice. rah!

Double Trouble

I really think people are in trouble. Previously, it’s just people losing money in stock markets. analysts claims stocks to be undervalued, and people have a glint of hope that this crash in the money markets is temporary.

these week’s commodity market totally shut all these hopes up. completely washed away. with such margins, companies’ value will not just be eaten up. i really think people are in trouble. this week crude is down, soybean is down like mad, palm, corn, gas, everything down.

look at the supply of these energies. corn, palm, soybean comes from plantations. they constantly supply. when demand goes down like this, producers are in trouble. world crude supplier from middle east. when we look at how much middle east economy has boomed due to the increase in crude, i can expect a crash, i mean a real crash in their property markets. scary.

the ‘trouble virus’ seemed to start spreading to europe. the real estate lending firm in germany that needed the govt’s 50B euros to bail? i mean, germany?? we heard about subprime in the US and UK, but nothing in germany so far. without subprime, if the real estate firm is going down, then many other european countries will also be in trouble. and germany is supposedly strong. with it down, spain, which experienced one of the highest growth in the property market will also be in trouble. and we havn’t even gone to the smaller economies like Poland, Czech.

after europe it will definitely go to middle east. dubai just released a plan to inject 95B to build a new town in dubai. i guess they’re trying the china way — spend spend spend to increase consumption in the economy. it definitely worked for china in 1998, where we literally buildings being built without marketing them to the market. funny thing is, those buildings were eventually being used in china. in dubai, who’s going to live in those towns? hahahaha!

after middle east the natural thing is asia. if it comes to asia, i dont know how we’re going to take it man. the people here can hardly breathe even without the so called hit. markets down almost 60% for so many counters. how are we going to cope!

industry wise, i think 2 we cannot touch: property and financial markets. with the german real estate lender down(similar to fannie and freddie), we see that there is a real, REAL liquidity problem in the world today. if i’m a bank, the first industry i will squeeze is real estate developers. if interest goes to 8%, and property markets down by 50%, i see how they can not make losses next year.

liquidity problem also will kill all the banks. simply look at the 2 investment banks granted commercial licenses. haha. gold-stanley. their core biz model, for one, is gone. they’ve been making money mainly on leverage. with their conversion, they are now subjected to regulations that govern banks, including things like capital asset ratio. to keep their car, they either have to raise capital, or sell their assets. i believe both will happen. goldman has already raised capital in the open market at 123, lowering to about 20. they have to do more. maybe sell their assets. just watch.

in this market, the funny thing is that people really panicked. they stopped looking at valuations. they simply don’t hold anymore! for u warren buffet fans out there, maybe u’ll say things like ‘in 3 year time, valuations still hold’. but look, how can we guarantee there is a-3-year?? anyone, i mean anyone, can go bust tmr. we’ll nvr know. balance sheets are like trash, because assets are super overvalued, and noone really go do their mark to markets right?

one way to look at this: in 1997, Indonesia owed the world about 7-8B. the whole country was turned upside down. almost went bankrupt. look at the scale of bankruptcies today. wayy more than that. are we sayign that the value of these companies more than that of indo 10 years ago? this point, again, deserve another laugh. hahahahaha!

if u ask me, i think it’s better to stay out of the market. and watch for the real gems in between all these companies. who are the ones who can still make money in this markets. results will show, and we’ll know. for now, noone knows what’s ‘value’, and noone knows how many people know ‘value’. if u’re a warren fan u may not agree with me, but even if u believe in fundamental valuations u have to agree the crazy market is not following that. for one, goldman shares is trading at warren’s warrant (no pun intended) price — 115.

World changing

I really came on the right trip. it is truly a privilege. even if i am sacrificing my music east and west, it’s really worth it.

the things i’m seeing and hearing, should truly be written in a book and be an inspiration to many people out there. really. maybe they have a few more chapters to write, and the rest is about succession planning.

but even as i am thinking about this, he made that comment. the key is to never have people write about you. the key is not to get big headed. see the right attitude these people have? and they are people who have truly conquered the world, or at least this part of it. and hearing how they did it, first hand, believe me, blew my mind away.

they credited a lot on luck. the right time,t he right people. to me it’s just a lot of good attitude and a lot of God being involved. they don’t know that of course.

and they did so many thins right, with the rgiht mindset.

i can’t go to too many details but just one idea we talked about: charity.

we always talk about helping people. but how do we do it right? the world power is in business and money, at least this is how society defined it to be. and when we decide to do charity work, we need to have the right methods. otherwise, it’s all wrong and wasted.

it’s always about changing lives right. not about giving money. we change lives when their improved lives are sustainable. one example is when people build schools or library. and after that they dont change the books forever! so what if there is reader’s digest available to students in china and indonesia? one year later it’s the same book available. or are we one of those that give an amount to a school, put our name there and never look at it again?

in kalimantan here, even though it’s a business, people’s lives are being changed. when people work for the plantations, we build housing. we build mosques and churches. we give them jobs. their family then moves here and starts bakeries, supermarkets. imagine a whole town being built up. property prices jumping at alarming rate. all because one company invests. this is the way to chnage lives. the company or the plantation may pass. but the whole town will forever be built up.

when we change lives, we need to be able to attract people to contribute without feeling they are contributing (like people investing in the place when we make it a good place). and that’s really what i meant by RIDING on business to do charity. amazing.

another village in china. people tried to give moeny to improve their standard of living. give them cattles, and cattle-feed consistently to build the business. but not working!! one look and we know, it’s a hilly terrain there. it costs a bomb to transport those feeds. and they need constant input of money to keep their business running. they saw an opportunity and realized the place is suitable for planting kiwi and oranges. after investing an amount to breed good seeds, distribute, train them, invest in them, they now own their mini plantations. marketers all over the worlds came and start buying from them, building up their marketing chain all over china or glabally.

isn’t this the way we should chnage the world?

as christians we do not always have to feel limited. quoting pastor tan, all of us have the ability to change the world. to do good. it’s really not about the thing we do, but the idea behind it.

believe me, if i have a good idea but no money today and i write to bill gates. he’ll invest in me.

it’s just so amazing. so this trip really renewed my mind. i want to do things right for my life too.

on another note, i don’t know why wilmar’s trading at the price now. from what i’m seeing around me, they built an amazng business with competitive/comparitive advantage in lots lots lots of areas compared to their competitors.

Simply love this song. Sometimes we just need that one person to tell us: give it one more shot.

Find Your Wings
By Mark Harris

It’s only for a moment you are mine to hold
The plans that heaven has for you
Will all too soon unfold
So many different prayers I’ll pray
For all that you might do
But most of all I’ll want to know
You’re walking in the truth
And If I never told you
I want you to know
As I watch you grow

I pray that God would fill your heart with dreams
And that faith gives you the courage
To dare to do great things
I’m here for you whatever this life brings
So let my love give you roots
And help you find your wings

May passion be the wind
That leads you through your days
And may conviction keep you strong
Guide you on your way
May there be many moments
That make your life so sweet
Oh, but more than memories

It’s not living if you don’t reach for the sky
I’ll have tears as you take off
But I’ll cheer as you fly

— i just want to be that person.
